Change of surgery name
Due to the relocation of our premisis, we have decided to embrace a new name from ' The University Surgery'...to...'Uni-city Medical Centre'.
It will still be us, just with a new name and a shiny new purpose built building!
We hope you're as excited about this move as we are!
What is Proposed
Due to University redevelopment plans, the Practice need to replace the existing University Surgery Practice premises after the current lease expires at the end of 2021.
The current Practice list of c.21,000 represents nearly 10% of the CCG’s resident population and comprises some 75% University students and 25% local residents. The past steady growth in both students and the general population has already caused serious pressure on clinical and non-clinical space and this will continue as a result of the continuing University expansion and planned housing growth of between 2,400 and 3,000 additional homes in the city centre by 2036.
A new building has been secured in Portsmouth City Centre, and is currently being refitted to the latest standards for our occupation, to be ready at the end of 2021.
Where will the new Centre be?
The New Centre address is 159-161 Commercial Road, Portsmouth. This is the old Miss Selfridge retail unit within the City Centre. This is approximately 0.5miles from the current site, located immediately adjacent to the Cascades shopping centre.
Importantly, being situated in the heart of the City provides a very accessible location to our patients, the majority of whom also live within the City. There is also expected to be significant population growth within the City in the coming years, which we will be better equipped to provide for within larger, fit-for-purpose premises.
How will I get there?
The site was chosen as it is very close to the majority of our patients listed at the practice. There is excellent parking provision in the City Centre, which also has excellent public transport links. A current bus map is provided below for those requiring public transport.
Will services Change?
The same GP service will transfer to the new facility when ready.
The new facility is however approximately 3 times larger, providing modern, fit for purpose accommodation with additional clinical rooms for providing additional services locally.
The Practice already provides the following services that it wants to expand and develop;
o Minor surgery already active
o Family planning & sexual health service & LARC ( long acting reversible contraction Coils & Implants)
o Respiratory service
o Diabetic clinics, with a specialist nurse clinic held monthly
o Mental health & community support services.
o Health and wellbeing sessions
o Mental health counselling service
In addition to these, the additional space will provide the opportunity for additional community services to provide services locally.
Do I need to do anything?
No. Our Local Health Authority (PPSE) NHS England will write to all our patients when the services have transferred to the new location. We look forward to seeing you later this year in our new, state of the art premises.
What if I have a Question?
We are in the process of organising a dedicated practice email address for any questions relating to the move. Please do not send any questions to us at PCCG.TheUniversitySurgery@nhs.net
